This post is long overdue and there are so many things I’ve wanted to say but just haven’t been ready to say them. Today is about as good a day as any, I suppose, so it’s now time to talk a little about where I’ve been and where I’m going. Should anyone care to read it all, of course.
Those who know me know I’ve been very passionate about politics for the past 13+ years. I got my first taste in political activism back in 2004 and was hooked. I wasn’t a conservative, I wasn’t a liberal, I wasn’t a Republican or a Democrat. I just saw a lot of corruption, lies and distractions that bothered me and I didn’t feel the American people were being properly represented.
So I packed up my web development and marketing skills, and made the move to full time work in government affairs and the political realm. I’ve been blessed to work with some amazing people, organizations and companies over the years. I’ve seen a lot of success and experienced failure. I’ve made friendships that I wouldn’t trade for the world.
But, sadly, I saw the dark side of it all too. The backstabbing, the slander, the accusations, the drama, the betrayal, etc. For many in that world it’s every man for himself (or woman for herself, of course). And if you’re no longer valuable to someone you will often times find yourself in their crosshairs for their own political or financial gain.
It’s a cutthroat world that most have no idea exists. A dirty environment where the truth is most often hidden below layer after layer of lies and deceit. The things I know about many “conservatives” who were elected to office or are now seeking office would melt the minds of most. That pretty yard sign and well produced TV ad is designed to empower you to only see half the story. The other half they never want you to see, because if you did you would be left revolted. Disgusted and ready to throw in the towel.
I promise you the number of people elected to federal office who are truly what they show you they are can be counted using only one hand. It doesn’t matter if they’re a Democrat, Republican or somewhere in the middle. It’s all a lie. It’s all smoke and mirrors.
Combine that with the fact that none of them are capable of truly caring about you or me and it just becomes overwhelming. Yeah, they want your $20 donation, but the $5,000 donation means so much more. And those $5,000 donations come from special interests who don’t give a damn about your concerns.
For many in political activism they dedicate their lives to the fight. And for most, there is no financial reward. It takes your life. It takes 60+ hours a week minimum, and if you’re lucky to be paid for some of your time the calculation on hourly wage would have you making better money working at Walgreens.
I admire those who continue the fight. My hat is off to you. And while I will never wave the white flag, my days of dedicating my life to this fight are over. I just can’t do it any more.
There are only so many times you can be stabbed in the back and betrayed by those you work so hard to see elected before you have to stop and consider what else you’ve done with your life. I’m at that point.
I’ve experienced some incredible victories and some devastating losses. But none of them have led to positive impact on the American people in terms of a representative government. And I can no longer be convinced that anyone running for federal office is going to truly adhere to the core principles of representing We The People.
So I’m done with it all.
To those who have granted me your friendship with no strings attached, thank you. I cherish that friendship and hold it close to my heart. To those who will continue the fight on principle… Godspeed to you. Keep up the fight and always stay vigilant.
As for me, it’s time for me to get back to my roots as a nomad. I grew up exploring, traveling and enjoying the outdoors. I appreciate the miracle that is our world and I appreciate every minute of life more when I can be out there in it.
There is so much more to this life than politics and the 24 hour news cycle. If we fixate and devote all of our time the corrupt news of our world and those responsible for it, we miss out on what is really important. We miss out on the miracle of life itself.
I’ve accepted the position of Director of Programming & Development for a company called Square House Creative and I couldn’t be more excited to begin work there in a full time capacity come November of 2017. I’ll be responsible for production of content surrounding a wide range of nomadic/travel related stories and topics. I’ll be working with a great team and exploring a plethora of stories about people who have “unplugged” from the program society seems to want us all to adhere to.
Some live full time in recreational vehicles, some live as digital nomads and others just live a life of off-grid exploration. A fascinating world that most don’t know exists. A world that I can very much relate to, I find incredibly interesting and one that enables me to breathe and actually enjoy life for a while.
I haven’t really opened a news app for a few weeks now. And I can say it has been amazingly refreshing. It’s incredible what is out there in our world when you look beyond what the mainstream media wants to see. And look in our world is exactly what I’m ready to do. In a very big way.
More updates on this to come as I transition from my current position into the next.
